Our Barra Story.

The photos in this album were taken on a trip to the Isle of Barra in March 2004. The island lies at the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides otherwise known as the Western Isles of Scotland.

I’d been planning this holiday since the beginning of January 2004, and although Sarah knew we were having a Spring holiday, only I knew where we were going! We set off on the M62 on Thursday morning (25th March), and I told Sarah that we were heading towards North Wales. When we turned off the motorway and headed towards Manchester Airport I finally revealed our true destination!

There was a delay in leaving Manchester, so when we landed at Glasgow Airport we were told that the pilot of our connecting flight to Barra was getting a little impatient as he wanted to get ahead of the tide! The airport on Barra is on the beach and that's exactly where the plane lands... on the beach!! The planes they use for this service are Twin Otters as they are renowned for their short takeoffs and landings. They’re relatively small aircraft seating around fifteen passengers. After a successful dry landing we caught the local post bus to the island’s village capital Castlebay. Keen film buffs among you will know that Castlebay is where ‘Whisky Galore’ was filmed.

As this is a photo album website I’ll let the pictures tell the story of our holiday! But I will just say that Barra is a beautiful island! During the summer it is known as the ‘island of flowers’. Anyone who is thinking of visiting the Western Isles should certainly consider arriving by air and landing on the beach on Barra, an experience Sarah and I will never forget!

This is my first website that I’ve designed so would appreciate any feedback. Let me know how you get on navigating through the pages. You can contact myself or Sarah at:

Our album contains 62 photos which I have divided into 6 smaller albums to help make viewing a little easier. I’ve kept the photo sizes as small as possible to make downloading less painful for all you dial up users!

Brocken Spectres.

Sarah and I have been lucky to see Brocken Spectres whilst walking in the hills, the most memorable being on top of Tryfan in North Wales!

We hope you enjoy looking at our holiday photos!
